You can pick up a car in one Thai city and drop it in another, for example Bangkok to Chiang Mai or Phuket to Krabi. The drop fee was quoted at 1,500 to 3,000 baht between branches in a 2026 market guide, and some firms cut it to nothing if you rent for long enough. Booking takes about 20 minutes. Before you start, know this: the fee is often left out of the headline price, and changing the drop point without telling the firm can cost you a penalty on top of the fee.

What you need

  • Your pickup and drop-off branches, named exactly

One-way rentals generally run only between a firm's own branches. An airport branch and a city branch count as different locations.

  • Your rental length in whole days

The fee can depend on it. Some firms waive the fee at 5 days, others at 7 or more.

  • Passport, home licence, International Driving Permit and a credit card

These are the same documents any rental in Thailand requires. The card covers the deposit hold.

  • Budget for the drop fee: 1,500 to 3,000 baht

This is the typical range between branches given by [Adventure Thailand](https://www.adventure-thailand.com/driving-in-thailand-car-rental-idp/) in 2026. Short local moves can cost less.

Book it in six steps

  1. Enter different pickup and return branches in the search

You should see a quote that is higher than the same dates with a same-branch return, or a separate line labeled one-way or drop fee. If the price is identical, the fee has not been added yet. It is not free.

  2. Find the drop fee in the terms

The International Drivers Association warns that many firms charge the fee outside the displayed price. Open the full terms and look for a figure. You are done with this step when you have a baht amount in writing.

  3. Check whether a longer rental removes the fee

Chic Car Rent, the Honda-backed firm, was reported on ASEAN NOW to waive its one-way fee from 5 days. Road Genius says some firms waive it on common routes past 7 days. Budget is widely understood to scale its fee by rental length, but we could not confirm Budget's current tiers from its own documentation. Ask for the figure for your dates when you book. You should come away knowing the day count, if there is one, at which the fee drops to zero.

  4. Ask about same-city moves separately

SIXT does not charge a drop fee if you pick up and return within the same city or island, for example two branches in Bangkok or two in Phuket, according to its Thailand policy. It charges for drops in a different city. Check this before you pay a fee just to return the car to the airport.

  5. Look for a relocation deal on your route

Firms sometimes waive the fee to move cars where they need them. Drive Car Rental lists a free drop from Samui (airport or Bophut) to Phuket (airport or Patong) from October 1 to November 30, 2026. These deals rotate, so check the firm's deals page for your dates.

  6. Book with the drop-off branch written on the contract

Your confirmation should name the return branch and show the fee, or say it is waived. If it says neither, email the firm and keep the reply.

One-way fee or drive it back?

On a long route, pay the fee. Bangkok to Chiang Mai is about 700 km and 10 to 12 hours of driving, so a return trip adds at least two rental days plus a second tank of fuel, which will usually cost more than the fee. On a short route the answer can go the other way. Phuket to Krabi is about 160 km and 3 to 4 hours, so a same-day drive back may cost less than the fee. Add your own fuel estimate before you decide.

The comparison most people miss is adding a day to cross a waiver threshold.

Hypothetical: four days plus a fee, or five days free

Say a firm charges 1,200 baht a day and a 2,000 baht drop fee, and waives the fee from 5 days.

4 days at 1,200 baht4,800 baht
Drop fee2,000 baht
Total for 4 days6,800 baht
5 days at 1,200 baht, no fee6,000 baht

The extra day costs 800 baht less than the fee. You can return the car on day four and still come out ahead.

When it goes wrong

Call the firm before you drive there. BudgetCatcher in Chiang Mai, for example, charges a minimum 2,500 baht Unauthorized Return Fee if you do not contact it first, and can add distance charges on top. SIXT says an unannounced one-way return can also carry a penalty.

This comes up often. In an undated [ASEAN NOW thread](https://aseannow.com/topic/1083278-one-way-car-rental-from-chiang-mai/) on Chiang Mai to Pattaya, posters reported about 12,000 baht a day from Avis, about 2,700 baht a day from Budget and about 1,200 baht a day from Chic. Get a quote from a Thai firm as well before you book.

Price the last leg in. In the same thread, Chic's Pattaya-area drop was U-Tapao airport, about an hour out, and a taxi from there added roughly 2,000 baht.

Next: the rest of the rental

You now have a one-way booking with the fee in writing, or waived. The return branch will inspect the car without knowing how it looked at pickup, so take your own photos at both ends. Our page on damage billed at return covers what to photograph. Also check how long the deposit hold on your card lasts after you drop the car.
